Human emotion is one of the biggest barriers to success in trading, and often the cause of huge losses. We study the market, sit in front of our screens, and keep moving the mouse, but still get lost in fearful “what if I lose my money?” thoughts.
But staying stuck in fear and confusion brings you nothing. According to a MarketsandMarkets report, the algorithmic trading market could reach $24.8 billion by the end of 2028, with a large share of that coming from algorithmic trading bots.
Another report found that nearly 87.7% of individual traders lost money, while algorithm users captured 99% of professional profits. This is why algorithmic trading bots with technical indicators are more necessary than being an option in 2027. This blog will guide you on the need for crypto trading bot indicators, their types, and strategies.
Algorithmic trading bots help traders execute trades in crypto markets without their presence. Yes! Rather than manually placing orders, instructions are implemented in the software code when developing the bot. It monitors the market every minute and checks if the conditions are met; if yes, it automatically executes trades.
The efficiency of these self-learning trading bots may help traders in volatile markets manage their trades rather than constantly having to analyze charts to trade. But it still depends on technical indicators to make it effective enough in the markets.
Factor | Manual Technical Analysis | Automated Indicator-Based Trading |
Working process | The trader studies charts and interprets signals personally | The bot evaluates market data against programmed conditions |
Flexibility | The trader can consider news, unusual price action, and other context | The bot responds only to situations its rules are designed to handle |
Time and attention | Requires regular chart monitoring and attention | Can monitor supported markets continuously while running |
Consistency | Decisions may vary with experience, fatigue, or emotions | Applies the same programmed rules whenever conditions are met |
Market coverage | Following several charts can become difficult | Can scan multiple supported markets simultaneously |
Disadvantage |
Human reactions can lead to inconsistent decisions | Poor rules, faulty data, and unexpected market events can still cause losses |
1. Relative Strength Index
RSI shows how much momentum there was recently in price. The oscillator values range between 0 and 100, and the default RSI period is 14. When the value is above 70, the condition is said to be overbought, and when it is below 30, it's oversold.
An algorithmic trading bot crypto robot, applies RSI to detect possible changes in momentum and trading opportunities. For instance, the trading robot may be tracking RSI below the 30 level to detect further bullish confirmation and generate the signal to buy. In the same way, it may track overbought market conditions when RSI is over 70. Being oversold doesn't imply that price should fall, and being overbought doesn't mean that the price should reverse. In case of strong trends, RSI may spend some time in overbought or oversold conditions.
2. Moving Average Convergence Divergence
It is a trend-following indicator that measures whether momentum is increasing or decreasing and is composed of two moving averages, typically 12 and 26 periods, with an additional 9-period signal line. This helps the bot track shifts in momentum. The classic setup is based on the crossover.
If the MACD crosses over the signal line, then bullish momentum is increasing. If it crosses under, then bearish momentum is decreasing. The bot uses these crossovers to identify trade entries and exits. However, the MACD is lagging since it is constructed using moving averages.
In volatile environments, it can generate many false signals, which results in more trades and costs.
3. Simple Moving Average & Exponential Moving Average
SMA & EMA are both moving averages that help an algorithmic bot to understand the direction of the market by filtering out fluctuations. The SMA treats all candles in the period equally. EMA puts greater importance on the recent candles, hence faster response.
There are two ways an algorithmic trading bot applies moving averages. One is the price position to identify the trend; this means if the price is trading higher than the 200-period average, then the bot looks for buying opportunities, and below means looking for selling opportunities.
Second is crossover, where a fast-moving average like the 50 crosses can be used along with a slow 200 average.
Golden Cross: The 50-period MA cuts the 200-period MA from below and suggests that there could be a bull market.
Death Cross: The 50-period MA cuts the 200-period MA from above and suggests that there could be a bear market.
Fast MAs react immediately, but they provide too many wrong signals. Slow MAs ignore most noise but delay their signals.
4. Bollinger Bands
Bollinger bands are also a volatility indicator that consists of three bands: the middle band, upper band, and lower band. When the volatility of the market increases, the bands get wider, and when it decreases, they get narrower. The algorithmic trading bot can employ Bollinger Bands in the following two ways.
Volatility detection and breakout detection
If the bands have become very narrow, it means that we observe a period of low volatility. Such a situation is usually called a Bollinger Band squeeze.
The bot can recognise such a situation and start watching for a potential breakout. But the Bollinger Band squeeze does not show how the future breakout will develop. The bot needs a price breakout, an increase in trading volume, or momentum for further confirmation.
Mean-reversion study
If the price touches or even crosses the upper or lower bands in a trading-range market, the bot may be able to detect this and proceed to find confirmation of reversal before deciding on a trade towards the middle band.
A touch at the upper band does not always imply a SELL, and a touch at the lower band does not imply a BUY in strong trends.
5. Average True Range
It is a volatility indicator that shows how much an asset moves on average during a certain time period. In contrast to RSI and MACD, ATR does not show whether the market is bullish or bearish but the amount of price movement. This is why it is so good for managing risk. The default setting is 14 periods.
Trading algo bots can use multiples of ATR such as 1.5x or 2x ATR to set the stop-loss distance. When volatility rises, the stop-loss distance can be increased, and vice versa when volatility drops.
The bot will also facilitate dynamic position sizing. When volatility rises, the trade size is reduced by the bot in order to ensure the risk per trade is as planned. In case of low volatility, the trade size can be increased by the bot based on the equity of the account, stop-loss distance, and other risk limits. But ATR doesn’t provide any signals for buying or selling by itself.
Indicator | Category | Measures |
Moving Averages | Trend | Direction of the trend |
RSI | Momentum | Strength of recent moves |
MACD | Trend and momentum | Shifts in momentum |
Bollinger Bands | Volatility | Price relative to volatility |
ATR | Volatility | Typical price movement |
1. Define Trading Requirements
Determine the market where your bot would be trading. This can be a stock market, cryptocurrency, or foreign exchange. Establish the trading assets, trading timeframe, and amount of automation you would like.
2. Select Technical Indicators
Pick technical indicators for algorithmic trading according to your trading goals. For instance, RSI and MACD will be used for analysing momentum, SMA and EMA for identifying trends, Bollinger Bands for measuring volatility, and ATR for risk management.
3. Develop Trading Strategies
Describe how the bot will use the indicators to conduct its trading operations. For instance, the bot can integrate EMA to determine the trend of the market and RSI to detect the entry points, along with ATR to determine stop-loss levels. These criteria can then be translated into a set of trading rules.
4. Integrate Market Data APIs
Integrate the bot with exchange or broker APIs to collect market data. REST and WebSocket APIs allow the bot to collect price and order information continuously.
5. Build the Trade Execution Engine
Design the execution algorithm that converts the signals created by the bot into orders for entering and exiting trades. Provide features such as market orders, limit orders, order status, and order execution.
6. Implement Risk Management
Add risk management features such as stop loss, take profit, position sizing, and maximum daily loss per trade. Test the efficiency of the trading system. Tune the parameters and settings of the indicators and trading strategy.
Technology | Purpose in Bot Development |
Python | Develop trading logic and automate indicator calculations |
Pandas & NumPy | Process recorded and live market data |
TA-Lib | Calculate RSI, MACD, SMA, EMA, and ATR indicators |
REST APIs | Retrieve historical data and submit trading orders |
WebSockets | Receive real-time market price and order updates |
PostgreSQL | Store market data, trade history, and execution records |
Redis | Cache frequently accessed data and support real-time processing |
FastAPI | Build backend services and API endpoints |
Docker | Package and deploy the trading bot in a consistent environment |
For instance, Python will manage the logic of the automated trading bot, Pandas and NumPy will manipulate the incoming market data, TA-Lib will compute the necessary technical indicators, and the strategy engine will check their values according to certain trading rules.
CCXT or exchange APIs will connect the bot to the corresponding cryptocurrency exchanges. WebSockets will provide live market data, PostgreSQL will store the trading history, and Redis will facilitate access to often-used data. Docker will aid in packaging the application.
The tools may vary depending on the type of trading bot you want to develop.
1. Trend Following Strategies
Simple in nature, ride a trend until it stops. This bot is not concerned about identifying the tops or the bottoms. The most widely used are EMA/SMA, MACD, and ATR. An example of a trend-following bot could be where a trader places orders only when price is above the 200-period average line, enters into a trade upon a crossover with MACD, and sets its stop using the ATR value. Low win rates in this case, since most of the trades would bring a small loss, but a few would offset the results and would be winners. Harder for sideways markets.
2. Intraday and Scalping Strategies
Both intraday and scalping bots close their positions before the market closes. Scalping bots do so within minutes after opening a position. Most popular here are VWAP, short EMAs, and RSI on timeframes of 1 minute to 15 minutes. The downside is costs. Wide spreads, high commissions, and the presence of slippage will swallow the profits of a few pips in size.
3. Mean-Reversion Strategies
The assumption here is that price will always revert to its mean after straying too far from it. The combination of RSI and Bollinger Bands is the one used most. For instance, the bot can buy whenever RSI is below 30, and the price is at the lower Bollinger Band. The major risk involved is that of a persistent trend in which the price continues to drop while the bot is buying at bargain prices. Here, the use of a stop-loss and trend filter comes in handy.
4. Breakout Strategies
In this case, the trading bot waits for the price to breach its range and then trades in the direction of the breakout. Tools such as Bollinger Band Squeeze, ATR, and Volume are useful. The main issue here is false breakouts, where the price breaches its level and goes back down without touching the trigger level.
Instant white-label trading bot solutions offer quick deployment. You buy algorithmic trading bot as a ready product, apply your own logo to it, and go live within a few days. But there are also some drawbacks to using this approach. You get basically the same bot from the same vendor under different logos. In other words, if several of your competitors use instant bots developed by the same service, you have the same features and trading results.
Predefined crypto trading bot indicators, strategy type, limited stop-loss, and daily loss control using a simple ATR mechanism leave you with no choice when you need something different. Plus, you don't own the source code, so your project is at risk if the provider changes pricing or even shuts down.
On the other hand, a custom-developed solution allows you to use the markets, brokers, and risk management policies of your choice and can be tailored to change the bot functionality whenever necessary, as per changing market conditions. However, it is not enough either, since a poorly constructed custom bot is still a poorly constructed bot.
The real power lies in technical indicators. You are free to use them in any combination, for example, an EMA-based trend filter, RSI for timing entries, and ATR for stop levels. The best thing about this approach is that you can test and optimize them with transaction fees and slippage taken into account.
Clarisco’s custom trading bot development services take a hands-on approach to developing trading bots that tailor to your business needs, strategy, and level of automation.
There's a crucial difference here in algorithmic trading bot development: instead of just slapping a standard bot template onto your project, we dig in and figure out how your trading system should feed on market data, spot opportunities, and then just go and execute trades.
With Clarisco, it's not just about turning a trading idea into a coherent strategy; it's about creating a fully custom-made, real-deal automated trading solution that actually works.
